Perspective

February 24, 2012

Once there was a man who had a lovely wife and family. They loved each other very much and enjoyed a simple, quiet life. However, the children had nowhere to hang up their coats in the winter. The man’s wife became annoyed with the pile of coats that would accumulate in the most inconvenient places. The man decided that the best thing to do was to install some coat hooks in the bathroom.

The man went to the hardware store and looked for coat hooks. He was greeted by the hardware store owner.

“May I help you, sir?” the owner asked.

“Yes”, the man said, “I have a lovely wife and family, and we lead a simple quiet life, but the children have nowhere to hang their winter coats. Do you have any hooks?”

“Indeed we do. We have hooks in the traditional style that would serve you marvelously for such a need”, replied the owner.

“And how much are they?”

“They are four dollars and twenty five cents each, sir.”

The man was dismayed. Four dollars and twenty five cents was more than he was willing to pay for hooks. He thanked the store owner politely and left.

“Did you get any hooks?” his wife asked when he returned home.

“No, they cost four dollars and twenty five cents each!’

“Four dollars and twenty five cents! My, that is way too much. I guess we’ll have to figure out another solution,” she said.

Over the next several winters, they tried and tried to solve the problem. She consolidated the piles into one strategically located Heap Of Outerwear. But the children would rummage through the Heap while attempting to rescue their own coats from the pile, and create a mess. The man installed wooden pegs on the bathroom wall. But the coats would not stay on the pegs very well. They slid off the smooth pegs and piled on the floor. This did not make the wife happy, either. She pleaded with the man for a better solution. The man agreed that something must be done. He picked his coat up off of the floor and headed out. Before he knew it, he was back at the hardware store.

“May I help you, sir?” the hardware store owner asked.

“Yes”, the man said, “I have a lovely wife and family, and we lead a simple quiet life, but the children have nowhere to hang their winter coats. It creates a terrible mess in the house, and we are beside ourselves with aggravation. Please tell me sir, do you have any hooks?”

“Indeed we do. We have hooks in the traditional style that would serve you marvelously for such a need”, replied the owner.

“And how much are they?”

“They are four dollars and twenty five cents each, sir.”

“Great! I will take five of them,” the man replied with a relieved sigh. He took the hooks home and showed his wife. “Look!” he said, “Hooks to hang all of our coats on! And they only cost four dollars and twenty five cents each!”

“Four dollars and twenty five cents? That’s not bad. I can’t wait to use them!”

The man installed the hooks on the bathroom wall and hung up all of their coats. The wife looked around the house and nodded in approval. “We should have done this years ago!” she said.

The man agreed.
